LIVELIHOOD |
There is dignity in work. “Give
a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach
him to fish and he eats for a lifetime”. Handouts help in times of great need.
But in the long run, dignity in one’s
work is far better than dependency on
handouts.
In
the Philippines, Care Channels works in 72
slums, provide livelihood for 180 families,
sponsors 700 children and treats about 10,000
medical and dental patients yearly.

The art of pressed
flowers can be used to harness the resourcefulness
and creativity of the poor and provide them
a means of livelihood. Plants and flowers
are collected, pressed dry and artistically
designed onto cards, frames, gift tags and

Cross stitch
is a favorite hobby for many women. Some of
them in transition from the streets and bars
need an alternative livelihood as a bridge to a new life. Others
are homemakers and students, working to supplement

A framing workshop is an excellent example
of developing livelihood projects especially
for the men. Those with some carpentry background
are trained in precision cutting, shaving
and polishing wood to make frames, coasters
and other items. Thy also learn to order stock,

his journey.
I was
an alcoholic and wife-beater. As a ‘barker’,
my job was to call out and direct passengers
to fill up a jeepney, for which the driver
will throw me a few coins as commission. Work
is only available when the police are not present.
I barely earn enough for my family of five.
Since I started working at Care Channels
office doing odd jobs, I have learnt to do
framing and calendar binding. I also learn
good family and work values from my colleagues.
I enjoy my work because my views and opinions
are taken into consideration, and I take pride
in my work. I have stopped beating my wife
and am learning to show her love. I no longer
steal from sleeping drunkards. I am aware
that I still get tempted in areas of my weaknesses,
and I need to grow stronger. (back
