There is dignity in work. "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime". Handouts help in times of great need. But in the long run, working towards self-sufficiency, and dignity in one’s work is far better than dependency on handouts.

Responding to the diverse needs of poverty, the 2008 Oympic edition of paper-cut calendars* provides work for many poor and needy in the Yunnan and Qinghai provinces in China.

Care Channels China seeks to help the poor through livelihood, community and other programs. This labour-intensive paper calendar project employs workers in the production of high-quality, hand-made products. The work allows the poor to have a livelihood and equips them towards self–sufficiency.

 

*Calendar design: paper-cut coloured shapes of animals engaged in 12 different Olympic sports - 100m sprint, table tennis, soccer, tae kwan do, weight lifting, hurdles, basketball, boxing, swimming, volleyball, diving and cycling.
